LYNN – Several Empire Street residents reported waking to a loud explosion around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.As it turned out, the State Police bomb squad had just detonated a device, believed to be a pipe bomb, inside an SUV parked outside 120 Empire St.The SUV belonged to Joseph Wright, a man in his 30s, according to neighbors who asked not to be identified.Police officials were unavailable for comment Tuesday, but the state Fire Marshall’s Office confirmed that the bomb squad detonated the device inside the parked vehicle.Part of the device flew off and hit the side of 121 Empire St., causing a significant hole in the vinyl siding.Neighbors said there were no flames from the explosion, just a lot of black smoke.”It sounded like a bomb. The whole house shook,” said neighbor Maria Soler, who said she immediately ran to check on her son when she heard the noise.”I don’t want to remember it,” she said. “In my mind, it was like 9/11.”
