The English High girls soccer team has been turning in one stellar defensive effort after another lately, but the Bulldogs have struggled putting the ball in the net. The drought finally ended Tuesday with a 2-0 win over Gloucester at Manning Field.English struck early, scoring both goals in the first 20 minutes. Stephanie Breault made it 1-0 early on and Lauren Hinkle netted her first varsity goal midway through the half.”We hadn’t scored a goal in seven games,” English coach Ed McNeil said. “It was nice to get to quick ones.”Megan Forti, Ashley Keighley and Lindsay Roy all had assists for the Bulldogs (2-7-3).Danvers 5, Classical 0At Manning Field, the Falcons (10-1) had no problem finding the net. Ashley Sullivan had a pair of goals and Brittany Russo, Katelyn Hartnett and Liz Burgess had single tallies while Caraline Moholland and Kasey Kellard split the game in net.Classical keepers Courtney Sullivan and Kelsey Ylonen had a busy game with 19 saves. The Rams (1-9-2) play Marblehead Friday. They may be down a player. Kelly Deveney injured her wrist during the game and had to be checked out at the hospital last night.Lynnfield 6, Amesbury 3At Lynnfield, junior forward Courtney Marolais had a hat trick (her first three goals of the season) to get the Pioneers in gear. Marolais scored 30 seconds into the game and again at the five-minutes. Jamie Harris had two goals for Lynnfield (5-5-2), Jenny Schelzi had one goal and Catherine Durant had four assists. Diana Triffletti and DevonWinthrop 6, Revere 3At Revere Monday, Julie Dowson continues to get the job done offensively for the Vikings. She scored four goals and now has 14 for the season. Courtney Finn and Alyssa Martel also scored. Winthrop is 7-2-2. with Peabody home on Friday.BOYS SOCCERGloucester 2, English 1At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, the Bulldogs (2-7-4) hung with one of the top teams in the Northeastern Conference at one of the hardest fields to win on but came away empty.”I was really pleased with the effort but unhappy with the result,” English coach Kerry King said. “We had a couple of point blank opportunities and couldn’t put the ball in the net.”Ulisis Guevara had the lone English goal, assisted by Mubarek Nyang, in the 50th minute. Midfielders Nelson Manuelo and Mike Tierer had great games on defense.Danvers 3, Classical 2At Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, the Rams (4-4-4) had a 2-1 lead in the second half but watched as the hosts charged back to get the win.”Both teams played great,” Classical coach Joe Skahan said.Miguel Castro and Dublie Olevira each had a goal for the Rams. Sophomores Dylan Davis, Ben Pasquariello and Chris Ciamps had the goals for Danvers, who also got two assists from Phil Marshwinski.Lynnfield 5, Amesbury 1At Amesbury, the Pioneers (6-4-2) got off to a sluggish start but got it in gear enough to rattle off five unanswered goals after trailing 1-0.Mike Kennedy scored twice to increase his total to 18 on the season. Phil Knox and Matt DeRosa also had goals with the fifth goal being an own goal.
