HAVERHILL ? It’s tough to win any game when you turn the ball over. When you turn the ball over five times, it can be nearly impossible.Whittier forced Lynn Tech into five turnovers while running back Bryan Trickett broke loose for touchdown runs of 62 and 63 yards as the Wildcats prevailed over the Tigers, 32-20, on Saturday in Haverhill. The victory improves Whittier’s record to 3-7, while Lynn Tech falls to 5-3.After the game, Whittier coach Kevin Bradley was proud of his young team for pulling out the win.”We were tired of losing close games. We wanted to win, and we did,” Bradley said. “I’m proud of our players and our coaches.”On the other sideline, Lynn Tech coach Gary Sverker said the result could have been different if a few key plays had gone the Tigers’ way.”We played hard. It was a game of big plays,” Sverker said. “Whittier made a few more big plays than we did.”Trailing 16-14, the Tigers appeared to gain the upper hand on their opening drive of the second half. Quarterback Jose Rios connected with Stefon Carter for a 35-yard touchdown pass, giving the Tigers their first lead of the game at 20-16.Unfortunately for the Tigers, Whittier needed only two plays to answer, as Trickett broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run to give his team a 24-20 lead that it would never relinquish. With one minute remaining in the third quarter, turnovers began to plague Lynn Tech. Whittier’s Kobie Jackson intercepted a pass by Rios and returned the ball to the Tigers’ 27-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Wildcats quarterback Dillon Ryan found Cam Taylor for a 16-yard score to give Whittier a 32-20 edge. From that point forward, the Whittier defense never allowed the Tigers back into the game, forcing two more fumbles by Lynn Tech to seal the victory.Although his team is on a three-game losing streak, Sverker said there were still many positive things about the game.”Jose Rios threw the ball well when he had time. Carter caught the ball well, and Moses (Valentin) had a nice touchdown run,” Sverker said. “So we did some good things. I just don’t think we were consistent.”Whittier dominated much of the first half, scoring first on a 34-yard run by Tyler Page that gave it an early 8-0 lead. The Wildcats nearly lost their early momentum, though, when they attempted to convert a fourth-and-three from their own 14-yard line. A Tiger stop gave the Lynn Tech offense a short field to work with, and Rios found Valentin for an 11-yard touchdown to close the gap to 8-6.”If you give us the ball within five yards (of the first down), we’re going for it,” Bradley explained of his decision. “We’ve got nothing to lose.”Whittier was able to answer only three plays later, as Trickett busted loose for a 62-yard scoring romp to raise the lead to 16-6. Just a minute before halftime, though, Valentin provided his second score of the game, returning a punt 78 yards for the score. After the game, Sverker said his team would move on and begin to prepare for its Thanksgiving Eve contest against St. Mary’s.”(The loss) wasn’t for lack of effort. Whittier made the big plays when they had to,” Sverker said. “We’ll take a day off, then we’ll watch some film, and we’ll get ready for St. Mary’s.”
