The Paul Duchane jamboree got the girls basketball season off to a rousing start Saturday night at Lynn Classical. While many of the teams looked impressive, perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was Bishop Fenwick, which, under new coach Tim Harrington, ran roughshod over Swampscott, 21-9, during their two eight-minute quarters.Defense was the name of the game in the first half, as both teams struggled to find a rhythm early. Despite its height advantage, Fenwick couldn’t convert on its lay-up attempts, but still led, 8-7 at the half. The second half was all Fenwick. The Lady C’s outscored the Big Blue 13-2, led by Bria Tiro (5 points) and Bridget Dullea (4).”We played really good defense,” Harrington said. “We really helped back to the well. I’m really pleased.”Kara Gilberg led Swampscott with 5 points.Reading 16, English 14The Rockets jumped out to a quick lead in the first half, running the score to 11-5 at the break.English, though, made its comeback in the second frame. Carlene Kulge came up with the winner for Reading, on a lay-in with 10 seconds to play.”The hustle was there, and we’re very young,” said English coach Fred Hogan. “As long as they go out and play hard for a full game, that’s all I ask for.”Duggins and Lashaunda Hogan led the Bulldogs with 5 points apiece, while Kluge was the high scorer for Reading with 7.Masco 27, Peabody 18Masco dominated from wire to wire, jumping out to a 9-2 edge early on and never looking back. Peabody was unable to exploit its height advantage against the smaller, quicker Chieftains, and was down, 13-4, at the break.Peabody never quite found a rhythm offensively during the game, and Coach Jane Heil said her squad just couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net during the game.”We got some pretty decent shots in the second half, but they just wouldn’t fall” Heil said. “But that’s what scrimmages are for.”Caroline Stewart, Jamie White, and Julie Galvin contributed six points each for the Chieftains. Samantha Lerner, Alyssa Manoogian, and Kerrie O’Shea score four apiece for Peabody.Classical 29, Wakefield 18The Rams used strong runs to begin and close the game in their victory. Classical sprinted to a quick 9-0 edge behind the hot shooting of Christina McKenzie, but they saw their advantage shrink to just 12-8 at the break.Wakefield fought back to tie the game at 16, but the Rams went on another run to seal the win. They outscored Wakefield 13-2 over the final five minutes, with Frances Mathieu and Shante Berry providing some instant offense.”I liked the energy tonight,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer. “We talked a lot about energy and effort. If they bring it (every night), we have a chance to compete with anyone.”McKenzie led the Rams with 11 points, while Keila Brown chipped in 7.Revere 11, North Reading 11Guard Christina Lavagnaro drilled a game-tying three-pointer with 23.8 seconds remaining for the Patriots for her only points of the contest.Teammate Stephanie Lento brought Revere to within 9-8 with just under two minutes remaining.
