After running into serious foul trouble in the first half of its season opener with Salem on Tuesday, the English boys basketball team needed to settle down and start playing.And do that it did as Ryan Woumn led all scorers with 19 points en route to a 69-56 win at Veterans Memorial Field House in Salem.The game was played with a somber air around the gym, as the Witches took the court without head coach Tom Doyle, who lost his father, Peter, unexpectedly over the weekend. The Salem players laid a wreath in the bleachers, where Doyle would normally sit.”That is a very tough place to win at,” English coach Buzzy Barton said. “But we settled down in the second half and started to do the right things.”Rafael Perez also had a solid game for the Bulldogs with 15 points. Charlie Rucker and Jeremy Subervi added eight each.The Witches (0-1) got 18 points from Junior Lugo and 12 each out of Chris Dunston and Beau Theriault.Classical 84, Revere 45At Classical, the Rams (1-0) got a challenge for the first 16 minutes, but outscored the visitors 45-18 in the second half.Jasper Grassa paced the Rams offense, which saw 10 players get on the scoresheet, with a game-high 18 points. Quivari Jackson had 16 while Jarell Byrd and Tony Wambi had 11 each. Wambi added eight rebounds.”Our depth was the difference,” Classical coach Tom Grassa said.St. Mary’s 78, St. Clement’s 60At Medford, the Spartans (1-0) got 26 points from Tyler Grillo and 17 points and 11 rebounds by John Bakopolus to beat the Anchormen.”There were a little bit of jitters early on, but we played well,” St. Mary’s coach Kevin Moran said.Mike Puglielle also reached double figures with 11 points while dishing out four assists.Swampscott 67, Danvers 50At Swampscott, the Big Blue (1-0) opened their brand-new gym in style as John Beaulieu had 19 points and Craig Rodenstein added 17 to pace the offense.Swampscott bolted to a 39-18 halftime lead and put it on cruise control from there.Beverly 51, Peabody 48At Peabody, Beverly’s Nate Knudson hit four free throws in the final minute to help the Panthers escape with an opening-game win. Beverly trailed by a point with 45 seconds remaining, but Knudson was fouled and made both shots to put the Panthers up by a point. Peabody missed on its next trip down the floor and fouled Knudson (6 points) again. He hit the next two to give the Panthers a three-point lead. Peabody had a crack at the hoop as time was running out, but Matt McQuaid (17 points) got a hand on the shot.”We need to take care of the basketball down the stretch,” Peabody coach Chris Mastrangelo said.Beverly’s Mike Clayton had 11 points and Curtis Manuel added seven points. Peabody’s Kevin Skop led the Tanners (0-1) with 14 points and Mark Linehan had 12.Ipswich 65, Lynnfield 59At Ipswich, the Pioneers (0-1) trailed 26-24 at the half and never were able to get in front. Mike Kennedy took care of most of the offense for Lynnfield, scoring a game-high 30 points.Winthrop 67, Gloucester 55At the Smith Field House in Gloucester, the Vikings (1-0) had three starters pick up two fouls in the opening three minutes but still had a 32-30 halftime lead.Things went much better for the Vikings in the second as Gavin Mahoney led all scorers with 22 points and Dino Mallios added 16.Brian Levine led Gloucester with 21 points and freshman Chris Unis had 14 in his first varsity outing.Methuen 57, St. John’s 51At Danvers, the difference came at the foul line, where the Eagles were outscored 21-2 in the game. Ryan O’Connell had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Prep, while Lynn’s Brendon Felder had all 14 of his points in the second half along with seven assists and five steals.M’head 63, Saugus 44At Saugus, the Magicians led 38-16 at the break. Damola Abu had a team-high 18 points for Marblehead; he added eight rebounds. Brandon Lee had 13 for the Magicians; Saugus got 21 from Dan Internicola.
