St. Mary’s didn’t have much success from 3-point territory Tuesday night against Ursuline Academy. The Spartans missed their first 12 attempts. No. 13, however, proved to be the charm.St. Mary’s was trailing 45-43 with two seconds remaining when Jackie Kapnis took a perfect inbounds pass from Alison McCarthy and buried a three from the wing to give the Spartans a one-point win (46-45) and a 3-0 record.This one had all the drama of a tournament game. St. Mary’s trailed 44-43 with 12 seconds remaining. The Spartans were forced to foul, and Ursuline missed both shots. The home team did grab the rebound, and St. Mary’s was forced to foul again. This time, Ursuline hit one from the line to go up by two points with only a couple of seconds remaining. That set the stage for the dramatic finish.”It was a great win,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall said. “Ursuline is a very good team and they have a very good program.”Newhall said Ursuline won 16 games last year, including one against Archbishop Williams, the eventual Division 3 state champion.”We did a lot of things wrong, but we made the big shot when we had to,” Newhall said.Tori Faieta led the Spartans with 16 points despite playing only about a half due to foul trouble. She ended up picking up her fifth with seven minutes remaining. When she was out there, however, she was dominating, Newhall said.Jenna Blydell had 10 points while Kapnis finished with five.Swampscott 56, Danvers 55At Danvers, the Big Blue pulled one out of the fire despite a valiant performance by the Falcons’ Danielle Sherry. Sherry was nursing a gimpy ankle all week and was questionable for last night. She not only played, but she finished with 33 points.”It was one of the best games I’ve ever seen her play,” Danvers coach Pat Veilleux said.Swampscott, which went 19-1 last year, had plenty of heroes of its own, beginning with Allie Beaulieu, who had 15 points, and Marissa Gambale, 13 points.Swampscott (1-0) led the entire game, but never by much. Danvers missed a shot with time running out. The Falcons are 0-1.Classical 63, Revere 53At Revere, the Rams (1-0) struggled defensively in the first quarter, giving up 17 points. But they would settle down from there and use 23 points from Christina McKenzie to get the win.”I was very happy with the effort that the kids brought,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said.Kayla Brown also reached double figures with 15 points and Suchette Men had seven of her eight points down the stretch to put the game away.Revere (1-1) got 13 points from Christina Cavagnaro and nine from Morgan Jenkins.Peabody 48, Beverly 44At Beverly, the Tanners’ (1-0) maiden voyage in the Northeastern Conference was anything but smooth sailing.Peabody held a 25-14 lead at the half before watching Beverly outscore the Tanners 17-4 in the third quarter to take the lead. But the Tanners put 19 points up in the final eight minutes to hold on.Lindsey Consoles led a balanced Peabody offense with 10 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter. Janelle Rodriguez had nine points and six rebounds and Michelle Grifoni added seven points and six rebounds.Ipswich 70, Lynnfield 38At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (1-2) had a tough time slowing down Ipswich’s Amber Smith, who finished with 33 points. Lynnfield junior Alison Newell had a strong game, netting 20 points, while Molly Serino and Diana Triffletti added six each.Fenwick 66, Waltham 54At Peabody, the Crusaders (1-0) made sure their new coach, Tim Harrington, got off to a good start. Bridget Dullea caught fire early, burying five threes in the first half. She finished with 21 points. Lauren DiCarlo (15 points) and Lizzy Trainor (11 points) also supplied some firepower.
