LYNN-Lynn English High School wrapped up a month of celebrating black history with an appearance by world-renown song and storyteller Janice Allen Wednesday morning in the school library.Allen specializes in a blend of African-American spirituals, gospel and Broadway musical songs. With a range of African American percussion instruments joined with a cappella vocals, her performances are described as a journey from the Georgia Sea Islands to the African continent. As part of the show, students are asked to participate, playing instruments, dancing and participating in traditional African children’s games.Library Media Specialist Linda Barefield has hired Allen for 14 years based on her energetic and educational performances that educate students in the history of African American culture and music.According to her Web site, Allen has toured nationally and made frequent concert appearances in Africa and Japan and conducted the Boston children’s choir that was featured at the Nelson Mandela Celebration at Boston Esplanade Hatch pavilion. She is winner of the 1989 Boston Parent’s Paper Children’s Entertainer of the Year award and has performed in lead roles in “Black Nativity,” Revels and the Wheelock Family Theater musical “Sound of Music.”The performance by the Philadelphia native capped off a February that celebrated black history and culture at the high school. Aside from Allen’s performance, Barefield set up a variety of educational performances, tributes and speakers to open the student’s eyes to African American culture. After school, programs featured film and reading activities, and assemblies during school hours touched on soul food cooking and Latin American and African musical tradition.”(Allen) is quite the performer – imagine being asked to lead the choir for Mandela when they honored him,” said Barefield. “Overall, black history month has been a huge success here at English.”
