SALEM – A Somerville man who admitted stealing $1,000 from the Sovereign Bank in Peabody last summer is headed to prison for up to five years.Jesse J. Descavich, 28, of 43 Main St., Somerville, avoided a trial by changing his plea to guilty Tuesday afternoon in Salem Superior Court to charges of unarmed robbery and buying and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. He was sentenced to serve 3-to-5-years in state prison by Judge Howard J. Whitehead. When Descavich is released from prison he will be on probation for another two years and must attend mental health counseling.Assistant District Attorney Jessica P. Connors said the charges concerned the holdup of the Sovereign Bank in Peabody last June.It was around 3:20 p.m. on June 29 when a man wearing sunglasses and a Red Sox baseball cap, later identified as Descavich, walked into the Sovereign Bank located at 300 Andover St., Route 114, in Peabody and handed a threatening note to the female teller demanding money. He fled the bank with over $1,000 in single bills. No weapon was shown during the robbery. The robber jumped into a white Dodge Ram pickup truck and sped away.A witness jotted down the partial license plate, which was broadcast to area police. The vehicle was spotted on Route 1 south in Saugus and after a brief pursuit the truck was stopped near the Lynn Fells Parkway.Inside the truck, police found the stolen money and a green Red Sox baseball cap.Another man, Kolten Berg, 27, also of Somerville, was the operator of the truck and Descavich was a passenger.Berg was also charged in connection with the bank robbery, but all charges against him were dropped by the commonwealth. Berg said he knew nothing about the bank robbery. Descavich took complete responsibility for the bank holdup.Berg has been free on bail since being arraigned. The judge credited Descavich the 312 days he has spent in jail awaiting trial on the case.
