SALEM – A Lynn man and a Dorchester resident police say they caught for robbery with an unlicensed sawed-off shotgun in February were two of the four local people indicted Wednesday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.Mathew K. Quon, 19, of 420 Essex St., Lynn, and Gary Elliott, 21, of 4 Otisfield Road, Dorchester, are charged with armed robbery, possession of a sawed-off shotgun and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony concerning an incident in Lynn in the early morning hours of Feb. 28 involving the holdup of a man on Union Street where about $60 was stolen with a sawed-off shotgun.The victim told authorities he was standing in the hallway of an apartment building at 19 Union St., at about 2:30 a.m., when the suspects asked him if he had any marijuana. After he reportedly responded no, Elliott allegedly pulled out a shotgun while Quon rummaged through his pockets, taking $60.Later, police responded to a call from a clerk at the 7-Eleven Store on Essex Street who had noticed the shotgun, partially concealed in Elliott?s coat, when the two men walked into the store shortly before 5:30 a.m.Police found the two suspects standing on the corner of Fayette and Essex streets and arrested them.When police arrested them they allegedly found a quantity of cocaine and marijuana on Elliott.Elliott also was indicted by the grand jury for unlawful possession of cocaine and marijuana in connection with the case.The indictments now move the case from Lynn District Court to Salem Superior Court where the two men will be arraigned within a few weeks.In the meantime, they remain held in lieu of bail at the Middleton Jail.Assistant District Attorney John Brennan is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.Also indicted were Michael J. Balboni, 38, of 27 Beyer Place, Lynn, charged with four counts of possession of an infernal machine and a single count of possession of a firearm.After receiving information on the morning of May 10, police went to Beyer Place to serve an arrest warrant on Anthony J. Gillette, 23. of Lynn, who apparently was inside Balboni?s home.It took several minutes before Gillette was apprehended, but during that time, someone allegedly threw an explosive device out the window.The device turned out to be a pipe bomb.State Police bomb squad was called in to safely detonate the device.A firearm was also found inside the home, police said.Then between Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, three pipe bombs were apparently found in the basement of an apartment on Hollingsworth Street, where Balboni reportedly stored explosives and gave heroin to the resident for payment.Gillette was not indicted in connection with the pipe bombs or firearm.Dawn Austin, 37, of 92 Congress St., Salem, stands charged with four counts of possession of heroin with the intent to distribute stemming from four drug deals with an undercover police officer at different locations in Salem between Feb. 29 and March 12.In each instance, two bags of heroin were reportedly exchanged for $80.She was arrested on Bridge Street following the last drug deal on March 12.Police officers Eric Connolly and Steven Bona made the arrest.Assistant District Attorney James P. Gubitose is assigned to prosecute the case for the commonwealth.Indictments are not an indication of guilt. It is a decision by a grand jury to warrant a jury trial in Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
