WINTHROP – Saugus National was facing a 3-0 deficit against West Lynn American after just half an inning Thursday. Buoyed by a three-run homer by Corey Lazurek, the Americans had confidence going forward.But that all changed with one swing of the bat.A two-run home run by Kory Dominick gave Saugus National all the momentum in a 7-3 win in the District 16 Little League tournament on Thursday in Winthrop. Saugus advances to play the winner of Saugus American and Winthrop.The blast, which was deep over the centerfield wall, brought Saugus within 3-2 and led the way to seven unanswered runs for the team.”That was big for us,” Saugus manager Joe Dominick said of the homer. “It got us back into the game after they scored three runs on us.”Two innings later, Saugus was able to capitalize on miscues by West Lynn. A dropped fly ball and an error on a ground ball put the first two runners on for Saugus. Justin DiChiara then scored on a passed ball, and Tyler Granara’s run on a Kory Dominick single gave Saugus its first lead at 4-3.Granara, meanwhile, was coasting on the mound for Saugus. After the home run in the first inning, he did not allow another run, going 5 1/3 innings and letting up five hits while striking out six.”He was right on today,” Joe Dominick said of Granara. “He was locating pretty darn well. He did a heck of a job for us.”After the home run by Lazurek in the first, West Lynn struggled on both sides of the ball. The offense mustered only three hits in the final five innings, while the defense made some crucial errors that led to runs for Saugus.”We tried to hold them, but we let it slip away,” West Lynn coach Steve Bain said. “The errors killed us. We didn’t play our best game today.”Saugus increased its lead in the fourth. With two outs, a triple by Granara to left scored two runs. Kory Dominick followed with a double into the gap in center, scoring Granara and giving Saugus a 7-3 advantage.West Lynn, though, had a chance to make some noise in the sixth. After Granara reached his 85-pitch limit with one on and one out in the inning, a walk and an infield single brought the tying runner to the plate for the Americans. Saugus pitcher Thomas Trainor was up to the task, however, striking out the final two batters to preserve the victory for the Nationals.Kory Dominick (3-for-3, 4 RBI) led the way for Saugus, with Granara (1-for-2, 2 RBI) chipping in as well. Lazurek (HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB) produced the scoring for West Lynn.Wilmer Pena went the distance on the mound for West Lynn.After the game, Bain said his team’s 7-6 victory over West Lynn American yesterday may have made a difference in their performance. That game was scheduled for Monday, but weather pushed it to Wednesday.”We played at 3 p.m. [Wednesday] and we had to play again tonight,” Bain said.”We were in limbo for a few days. But we’ll do better next time.”For Saugus, the victory meant a chance to stay in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.”We just continued to play the game,” Joe Dominick said. “We had to gad the bugs out and play the game we’re capable of playing. Once we got the outs on the defensive side, we played well from there.”
