SAUGUS – An all-out manhunt for a Peabody bank robbery suspect came to a dramatic end Thursday inside a bulkhead at 18 Pleasant Ave. in Saugus.Jason S. Murphy, 28, of Saugus, was yanked from the side of the house at about 5:20 p.m. after hiding for nearly three hours following a State Police car chase.”I didn’t rob no bank, dude!” Murphy exclaimed before launching into an expletive-laced verbal tirade as he was placed into the back of a police cruiser.James W. Adams, 26 and Kevin J. Fuller, 30, both of Peabody and an unidentified female were also arrested. The drama began to unfold at about 2:40 p.m. when a man robbed the T.D. Banknorth office on Lynnfield Street in Peabody.According to Peabody Police Lt. Dennis Bonaiuto, a man walked into the bank and passed a note to the teller demanding cash. He then fled the building and hopped into a Mitsubishi SUV, which witnesses said drove toward Goodwin Circle, Bonaiuto said.Minutes later a State Police Trooper saw the suspected getaway vehicle at the Mobil gas station on Route 1 southbound in Saugus, across from the Kowloon restaurant, according to State Police Capt. Richard Cashin.A woman ran from the SUV just before it sped away with three men inside, police said. The woman was arrested later, but she was not identified because she gave multiple false identities to State Police, according to a spokesman.Troopers chased the SUV southbound on Route 1. The vehicle then turned off at the Malden/Revere line and got back on the highway northbound as two Troopers followed closely behind. Finally the vehicle pulled over outside the Chisholm’s Motor Inn, just south of the Essex Street exit, and the three men began running. The two Troopers on scene caught two of the suspects, identified as Adams and Fuller, but Murphy managed to run away down nearby Pleasant Avenue.Pleasant Avenue is only accessible to pedestrians from the highway and not to vehicles. As additional State Police and Saugus Police units arrived, officers were unable to locate Murphy and a manhunt began.Stunned residents came out of their homes as a State Police helicopter, numerous cruisers and dozens of Troopers searched backyards and woods looking for the suspect. Most of the Troopers and several news reporters were stationed on Pleasant Avenue for over the next two hours.Tom Cronin has lived on the street for 22 years and sipped a Coors Light from his front steps as he watched the action.”It’s more exciting than scary,” Cronin said. “I’ve never seen so many police on this road.””It’s crazy. Absolutely crazy,” he added.About 10 minutes later, Murphy was found hiding in a bulkhead across the street, about 50 feet away from where Cronin was sitting.Residents and reporters rushed to the front of the home and watched as police struggled to detain him. After he briefly resisted, Troopers were able to handcuff Murphy and brought him to a police car. When asked by a reporter if he robbed the bank, Murphy answered, “What bank?” before repeatedly swearing and referring to police as “swine.”Neighbors enjoyed the action but were relived once the suspect was caught.”I was really worried,” Beech Street resident Richie Neuner said.Neuner, like many residents, compared the situation to a police-drama television show.”It’s amazing. I love the adrenaline,” he said. “I watch these shows all the time.”During the nearly three hours Murphy was hiding in the bulkhead, police set up a perimeter and conducted a gird pattern search.Capt. Cashin said police started to “back off” after a while because they knew the suspect couldn’t have run very far considering the quick police response. Police knew he was hiding out somewhere, he said.”Most criminals aren’t Olympic athletes and can’t run forever,” Cashin said. “They felt he had to be in this area. We had a perimeter set up very rapidly. We knew he couldn’t have escaped the perimeter.”Peabody police have charged each of the suspects with armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. State Police say they
