LYNN ? Even a little rain couldn’t stop Wyoma’s parade onward in the District 16 Little League softball tournament.Wyoma jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning before a rain delay halted play, and held on for a 12-5 victory over West Lynn American/Pine Hill at Flynn Field. The victory propels Wyoma to a date with Swampscott tonight at Volunteer Field in East Lynn. The productive first inning came a day after a strong offensive performance by Wyoma in a 14-8 decision over Marblehead. Coach Jenna Cash said her team’s hitting carried over from the Marblehead game and allowed her team to get the early edge.”They were pumped up from yesterday,” Cash said. “We had the bats going and we hit well yesterday, and we kept it going today.”With one out and runners on second and third in the opening frame, Kaitlin Calef laced a double to the left-field wall for a quick 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Molly Doyle hit a double to centerfield to double the lead to 4-0.After two walks, a pop single by Krista Cuozzo dropped near second base, and Abby Blake beat the throw to the second-base bag. The play allowed two more runs to score, and Wyoma was ahead 6-0.After a sacrifice bunt, Wyoma delivered its final blow of the inning when Shawna Zeramby lined a single to center that allowed the final two runs of the inning to come in.And then the rains came.A delay that lasted about 15 minutes affected both clubs, and WLA/PH coach Stephen Martin said it allowed his team to refocus.”It was a good thing,” Martin said. “It allowed us to settle down and change our defense, to make it a little tighter.”West Lynn American/Pine Hill bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on third and two out, Cayla Hally doubled to left for the first run. Kayla Castro and Shaina Cruel-Reynoso followed with RBI singles that made the score 8-3.West Lynn American/Pine Hill got one more run back in the third, when Hally scored on a groundout to first.A key moment in the game came in the fourth, when WLA/PH loaded the bases with none out. Already with one run in and holding on to an 8-5 lead, Wyoma pitcher Taylor Cash induced three straight ground balls that allowed her team to escape unscathed.”Taylor struggled a bit (in the inning),” Cash said. “But we came back and got three straight outs.”The inability to score seemed to deflate WLA/PH. Wyoma tacked on one more run in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game 12-5 victors.Bobbie D. Regan pitched the full game for WLA/PH, allowing eight hits, 10 walks and striking out two.Cash pitched all but the second inning for Wyoma. She gave up six hits and five walks, and struck out four. Makenzie Mackin hurled a scoreless second.Cash said she expects a tough task against Swampscott, which defeated Wyoma earlier in the tournament. Because Wyoma emerged from the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination tournament, it must win twice to take the title, while Swampscott needs only a single victory.”The bats have to come alive (against Swampscott),” Cash said. “We need to play strong defense and limit our errors.”On the WLA/PH side, Martin said his team would be supporting Wyoma in the game, hoping it can bring the title home as a Lynn team.”Congratulations to Wyoma; they’re a great team and got a well-deserved win,” Martin said. “Now, we hope they’ll win.”
