LYNN ? With the game clock winding down on the 13th Agganis All-Star Women’s Soccer Classic, it looked as though the teams were headed for a tie.The squads were deadlocked in a defensive struggle, with the North and South each able to find the back of the net once. But the North team had other plans. The North caught fire for two late goals, giving the team a 3-1 win in the annual contest. With the game tied, North MVP Maddie Bissaillon of Bishop Fenwick said her team stepped up late to secure the victory.”We wanted to win so badly,” she said. “We were excited and we pushed hard for the last 20 minutes for those last two goals.”The first of those two scores came from Winthrop’s Julie Dowson, who headed in a corner kick from Pope John’s Alysse Corolla to give her team a 2-1 edge with 12 minutes remaining.Ten minutes later, Bishop Fenwick’s Melissa Garabedian took a pass from her high school teammate Bissaillon that she laced past goaltender Kellie Barile of Pingree for the final margin. On the South side, MVP Sara Conway of St. Mary’s said that although she didn’t like the game’s result, the contest itself was a great experience.”Obviously, nobody wants to lose,” Conway said. “But it was cool. With so many girls here that we’ve all played against, it was nice to be on the same team.”Conway was especially strong defensively for the South, most evident when she blocked a shot by Dowson to preserve what was then a tie game with 33 minutes to play in the second half. Dowson had beaten goaltender Kristin Wyke of Salem, and Conway saved the goal by taking the shot off her chest.”There was a miscommunication on defense and my first instinct was to stop the ball,” Conway said of the play. “The goalie is usually behind us, but sometimes we have to get behind her, too.”The first half was a defensive struggle for both sides. The game went back-and-forth early, as each squad struggled to find a rhythm. With 25 minutes left in the half, Bissaillon got a pass in front of the South net, took a dribble to her right, and launched a shot past Barile for the game’s first score. The South tied the score with 10 minutes left in the period. Danvers’ Casey King corralled a long pass to the left of the net, which she crossed past Wyke for the equalizer.King and Lynn English’s Kristi Rebidue were named offensive and defensive players of the game for the South, respectively. Dowson was the North’s offensive player of the contest, while Mandy James of Marblehead took defensive honors. After the game, Bissaillon said one of the best experiences was playing with so many new players.”It was great to play with so many great players from different high schools,” Bissaillon said. “Some of them were friends, but some we got to meet for the first time.”Conway, a Lynn native, said part of the allure for her was participating in an event with so much history to it.”Growing up in Lynn, most of us had older brothers and sisters who played in the game,” she said. “Plus, there’s nothing like going up against your rivals, and having some as teammates.”Mike Kennedy and Joel Simons officiated the game.
