In the state title game against Plymouth on Sunday, the Saugus 13s often found themselves looking to regain the momentum in a topsy-turvy contest that wasn’t scarce for scoring.By answering with a big hit each time Plymouth rallied, Saugus showed why it deserves its new title as Babe Ruth 13-year-old state champion.Sunday’s 15-7 victory over Plymouth improved the team to 8-0. The game was a rematch of the teams’ tournament opener, which Saugus won, 13-12.Saugus manager Anthony Guthro said the timely hitting is what propelled his team to the title.”Every game, we hit well,” he said. “Our bats came alive and we were clutch pretty much every game.”Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Saugus tied the score with tournament MVP Dom DiPesa’s homer to left. A sacrifice fly by Nick Enos later in the inning put Saugus up 2-1.After Plymouth tied the score, a two-run homer by Ryan Henehan and a solo shot by Anthony Finnochiaro gave Saugus a 5-2 lead after two.Plymouth got one run back in the third with an RBI single by Connor Follette, but Saugus prevented further damage when DiPesa nailed a Plymouth runner at the plate on a double-steal attempt.”Good pitching and good defense were key ingredients we had,” said Saugus coach Derek Sweeney. “These kids were on a mission.”After another Plymouth run in the fourth, Saugus responded in the bottom of the inning. Dan Trentsch’s two-RBI double keyed a four-run inning for a 9-4 lead.Plymouth bounced back in the fifth, when an Alex Rozak two-run homer was the key hit as Plymouth crawled within 9-7.However, Saugus put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Finnochiaro and A.J. Guthro started the scoring with back-to-back RBI singles. DiPesa followed with a two-run single, and a third run scored on an errant throw. Saugus scored its final run when DiPesa beat a throw at home on an infield hit by Nick Antenucci.Antenucci (7 H, 9 BB) pitched a complete game for Saugus.Guthro said his team’s ability to keep its composure and bounce back from adversity was essential to its tournament wins.”We had the fight in us,” he said. “We never gave up.”Saugus will play Maine in the New England regional tournament in Westfield, Mass. on Friday.
