SALEM – A 41-year-old plumber who went on a two-month crime spree last year, stealing pocketbooks from vehicles and using the credit cards to purchase thousands of dollars worth of items – including a plasma television and a Sony PlayStation – from department stores in Saugus and Danvers is headed to prison for four and a half years.Robert F. Kalin, who last lived at 319 Metropolitan Ave., in Roslindale, pleaded guilty in Salem Superior Court Tuesday afternoon to five counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, eight counts of larceny over $250 and three counts of credit card fraud over $250.Kalin will have to serve four and a half years in prison before he is placed on probation for another five years.Judge Howard J. Whitehead adopted the recommended sentence offered by Assistant District Attorney A.J. Camelio and defense lawyer Lawrence J. McGuire.The charges stem from a series of motor vehicle break-ins beginning in May 2007 when he stole pocketbooks from vehicles in Saugus and Danvers and used the credit cards to buy large electronic items from Best Buy in Saugus and Danvers, as well as other local department stores.Kalin was seen on various surveillance cameras within the stores purchasing the items.He also had an unknown female accomplice assist him in the transactions, Camelio said.While on probation, Kalin will be evaluated for substance abuse treatment and will receive counseling as deemed necessary. He is to refrain from all drugs and alcohol while under their supervision.Whitehead firmly warned Kalin that violation of any of the terms could put him in prison for 50 yearsKalin has been in custody since being arrested on June 14. He will receive a 376-day credit towards his term of incarceration.
