SALEM – A Superior Court judge ordered a Lynn man, accused of having several pipe bombs in the basement of a Hollingsworth Street apartment and Beyer Place, is held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.Michael J. Balboni, 28, of 27 Beyer Place, #3, pleaded not guilty Monday to four counts of possession of an infernal machine, as well as a single count of illegal possession of a firearm.Assistant District Attorney Christina P. Ronan asked that he be held until a dangerousness hearing can be held because they feel he poses a danger to the community.A hearing was set for Aug. 19 by Judge Howard J. Whitehead.In the meantime, Balboni remains held on no bail status at the Middleton Jail.On the morning of May 10, after receiving a tip, police armed with a search warrant went to his home on Beyer Place to arrest another individual, Anthony J. Gillette, 23, who was inside.But before police arrested Gillette, a pipe bomb device was tossed out the window and the state pipe bomb squad was called in to safely detonate the device.A firearm was also found inside the home, police said.Then between Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, three pipe bombs were apparently found in the basement of an apartment 69 Hollingsworth St., where Balboni reportedly stored explosives and gave heroin to the resident for payment.Balboni is being represented by Attorney Neil A. Hourihan of Salem.Gillette, of 21 Kelly Lane, Lynn, was not indicted in connection with the case. Charges against him remained in district court.
