SALEM – Rodlyn Petitbois, the man charged with murdering a fellow Haitian last month and then triggered an Amber Alert when he fled with his girlfriend and four children to New York City, has been indicted by an Essex County grand jury.Assistant District Attorney Kate B. MacDougall wasted no time in presenting evidence during two sittings before a grand jury within the last week, resulting in nine true bills being handed up Wednesday afternoon against Petitbois charging him with murder in the first degree in the stabbing death of 33-year-old Greenland Etienne. He also is charged with four counts of assault and battery on a pregnant person, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of assault and battery in connection with the murder case and prior assaults on his 26-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Louna Eveillard.Investigators say Petitbois, 25, formerly of 15 Whittier St., Lynn, fatally stabbed Etienne in the face and eye inside her apartment at 99-1/2 High Rock St. around 1 a.m. on July 30 after telling Petitbois she was going to call police as he insisted that Eveillard and their four children leave with him.According to reports, Eveillard had left their Whittier Street apartment and moved in with Etienne about three weeks earlier after Petitbois had apparently assaulted her.On the day of the incident, Petitbois went to Etienne’s apartment to talk to Eveillard and during the course of the evening Petitbois apparently drank cognac while arguing with Eveillard. At about 1 a.m., witnesses said, Petitbois grabbed two kitchen knives and apparently cut Eveillard once on her hand and kicked her. A man inside the apartment tried to call police, but Petitbois reportedly threatened him also with the knife. Then Etienne said she was going to call police and, at that point Petitbois fatally stabbed her, witnesses said.Etienne later died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.State police sent out an Amber Alert after Petitbois fled with Eveillard and their four children, who ranged in age from 11 months to three years. Police had first thought that Petitbois kidnapped Eveillard and the children after killing Etienne, but later reportedly learned she willingly left with him.Petitbois was captured by police about 13 hours later in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn in New York City.He waived extradition and was brought back to Massachusetts to face the charges.Eveillard and the four children were found safe under a tree in Prospect Park in Crown Heights. Eveillard also waived extradition and was brought back to face a charge of being an accessory after the fact by helping Petitbois elude arrest and conceal his alleged crime. She remains free after pleading innocent in Lynn District Court. She was not indicted this week on any charges by the grand jury.Petitbois is also charged with beating Eveillard three times prior to the murder with a wooden stick and a knife between February and July 14, 2008.Etienne has been described as a victim of domestic violence because she intervened on behalf of a domestic case and lost her life as a result.Petitbois pleaded not guilty in Lynn District Court on Aug. 4. He currently is being held at the Middleton Jail without bail pending his re-arraignment in Superior Court. An indictment for first-degree murder carries a life sentence in state prison with no chance of parole.
