SALEM – A Lynn man who allegedly admitted he shot a man at Curwin Circle in 2007 after a juvenile was on trial for the crime has been indicted by a grand jury.Wilfredo Alvarez, 28, of 790 Western Ave. #2, Lynn, felt bad when a Lynn juvenile went on trial this June for the shooting of Eric Sanchez of Lynn on July 4, 2007.Alvarez appeared at the trial and admitted to Lynn Police Detective Stephen Pohle that he really was the shooter and the reason he was coming forward was because he had spent time in jail as a juvenile for a crime he did not commit and he didn’t want the youth to go through that same ordeal. The commonwealth initially went forward charging the juvenile after a female witness identified the youth as the shooter. It was later learned that the female had a grudge against the youth.Defense lawyer Alan Chipman of Lynn, who represented the youth at the trial, was prepared to introduce two witnesses who would had testified that the youth was not the shooter of Sanchez. Now Alvarez has been indicted on charges with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the shooting of Sanchez. The gun used in the shooting was never recovered.Alvarez reportedly told authorities he had tossed the weapon in a Dumpster.Assistant District Attorney Michael P. Hickey is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.
