SALEM – The district attorney’s office dropped charges against Edward Salie, the 77-year-old Lynn resident who crashed his vehicle into a snack stand outside Building 19 in 2005 and causing a woman to lose part of her leg, because he has died.Defense attorney Russell C. Sobelman reported to Judge Howard J. Whitehead Wednesday morning in Salem Superior Court that Salie, of 94 Western Ave., Lynn, died on Sept. 11 from numerous medical conditions including heart, kidney and liver failure.The district attorney then filed a “nol pros,” dropping all the charges against him due to his death.Salie, who had been living with his grandson on Western Avenue, was charged after an incident on the afternoon of Aug. 1, 2005 when he struck a sausage stand in the parking lot of Building 19 on the Lynnway with his Oldsmobile.The car pinned Paula Monteleone, now 66, against the building. She sustained severe injuries to one leg.Prosecutors maintained that Salie was drunk at the time of the accident, which he denied.He maintained he lost control of his car and had not been drinking.The case had been delayed numerous times due to changes in lawyers.In May, Sobelman was appointed by the court to defend Salie.Salie had been free on bail with the condition he remain under house arrest pending the outcome of his case. He was only to leave for medical, court and attorney appointments.
