LYNN – There’s a mystery on Grant Road.An older model revolver was found nestled in the woods by a curious three-year-old boy playing behind his grandmother’s house on Thursday.Possibly buried or quickly thrown away in years past, the rusty revolver, perhaps unearthed by recent heavy rains, lay in frozen silence on wet leaves and brush when little Ryan Daly discovered it.Thinking it was a toy, the young boy from Lynnfield picked up the gun and proudly showed his mother his find.”He just said, ‘hey mom, look what I found,'” Francesca Daly said in dismay. “I looked at it, poked it, and thought it looked like a toy at first, but realized it wasn’t.”Frightened by the find, Francesca notified a Lynn Police Officer (Paul Cotter) who was working a detail nearby about the mysterious gun.”He (Cotter) came over, squatted down to look at it and said, ‘yeah, that’s definitely real and an old revolver,'” she said. “He tried to open it, but couldn’t because it was frozen in place and the cylinder was partially open. Who knows how long it had been there.”Unfazed by his dangerous find, Ryan continued to play in the woods (owned by National Grid) while recounting what happened.”I have a gun just like that, but I can spray water out of mine,” he said with a smile before hopping onto his Radio Flyer tricycle.Ryan’s grandmother Virginia, who declined to give her last name, wondered how long the gun had been in the woods and for what reason.”Who throws a gun away unless they’re trying to get rid of it for a reason?” she said. “I was just surprised by it.”According to a police report, the revolver, which was taken as evidence, was severely corroded and the cylinder was filled with dirt.Because of the decay and dirt, police were unable to determine if there was ammunition in the gun or what the make or model of it was.”I’m just glad it (gun) wasn’t operational and that it got into the right hands,” Francesca said. “It would be interesting though to find out if the police could identify the gun to see if it was used and what the model is.”
