LYNN – Police have made a second arrest in connection with thousands of dollars in thefts from Breakheart Reservation in Saugus and two athletic complexes in Lynn.Christopher Mazzola, 18, turned himself into police around 2 a.m. Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.Police say Mazzola and Justin Hayes, 19, of 20 Bulfinch St. #2, Lynn, stole four vehicles, an array of tools and caused serious vandalism to facilities at Breakheart and the Babe Ruth Field and Hood Park outside Lynn Classical High School.Chairman of the Friends of Breakheart Ed Murray said Tuesday that Mazzola and Hayes did community service work at Breakheart a short time before the thefts occurred. Both men were arrested for breaking and entering in 2006.”To allow them to pay back society for something they did wrong and then to steal from us is a little disheartening,” Murray said. “You get these bad apples and it’s unfortunate.”Perhaps the most expensive items stolen were two $10,000 John Deere Gator tractors that were later recovered. One tractor was stolen from Babe Ruth Field and discovered the next day along railroad tracks on the Saugus-Lynn line along with an all-terrain vehicle and a golf cart. A second Gator tractor was reported stolen from Breakheart and found a few days later abandoned behind Starbucks on Route 1 South in Saugus.Police said a fingerprint taken from the crime scene at Babe Ruth Field on Sept. 1 linked Mazzola to the crime scene.Police later searched the Bulfinch Street apartment that Mazzola and Hayes shared, in which several items, including cordless tools and a Lynn Youth Soccer bag, were found.Mazzola and Hayes are also suspected in extensive vandalism to all three facilities.
