LYNN – A young girl was attacked by a pit bull on Lynn Shore Drive around noon Thursday and, according to Animal Control Officer Kevin Farnsworth, the owner and dog in question vanished before any information concerning them could be recorded.”The parent and young child, I would say four or five years old, were walking on the boardwalk when they encountered the dog,” he said. “I don’t know who owns the dog and I don’t know exactly what happened and for all I know, the woman who owns the dog may not even live in the city.”The child reportedly suffered a laceration to her face when the dog, described as a gray colored pit bull, pierced the skin of the young girl’s face.Farnsworth said the child was taken to Salem Hospital by her mother and might be required to get a series of rabies shots.”The mother called police about 10 minutes after the attack and she said the other woman with the dog had said to them, ‘Oh, he doesn’t bite, he’s friendly,'” he said. “I’ve heard that before.”Farnsworth said he and Lynn Police were unable to locate the suspect and the dog in the area.”She pulled a disappearing act,” he said. The investigation remains ongoing. In another case, Farnsworth said Cheryl Fornier of Beacon Hill Avenue, the owner of two pit bulls involved in an attack last month, has appealed the city’s ruling to ban her dogs.A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 20 at Lynn District Court to determine the final outcome of the dogs.”The court will either give her more time, say 10 days to find the dogs a new home outside of the city, or have her get rid of the dogs immediately,” he said. “Then, if she is found to be violating the court order, the dogs could be confiscated immediately.”The attack occurred on Walnut Street, where Fornier’s two digs bit Laurie George and her black Labrador/blood hound named Midnight. The incident left Midnight with two large wounds that required six staples to close them and George sustained leg wounds.Fornier has since offered to pay George’s medical bills for Midnight and has said the whole event was just an accident.
