BILLERICA ? What could have been a high-scoring affair between Lynn Tech and Shawsheen Saturday was derailed by a number of missed opportunities.Shawsheen held on to beat Tech, 10-8, in a defensive slugfest at Samuel J. Cassidy Field in Billerica. Shawsheen improved to 5-4; Tech fell to 3-6 (1-2 in the Commonwealth Conference Large).Tech was shorthanded going into the game because many players left the team this season for various reasons, head coach Gary Sverker said. The Tigers now have just four seniors on their roster.”We had a lot of young guys, so we let them go out and play as hard as they could,” Sverker said.Tech led 8-7 coming out of halftime, and Shawsheen missed two early opportunities to take the lead. Tech’s Anthony Coleman picked off a pass by Shawsheen quarterback Kevin White to end one red-zone threat, while Shawsheen fell a yard short of a first down on fourth-and-three on its next possession in Tiger territory.Tech gave Shawsheen the opportunity it needed, though, when a fumble allowed the Rams to set up shop at the Tiger 35. Eventually, Shawsheen took a 10-8 lead seconds into the fourth quarter on a 20-yard field goal by Nicholas Danas.Tech committed two turnovers on consecutive possessions to end the game. A fumble ended a Tiger drive at the Shawsheen 37 to begin the fourth quarter, and Shawsheen’s Michael Allen intercepted a pass by Tech quarterback Dustin Rooney on the final drive to seal the victory with just over a minute remaining.Tech lost the ball on its game-opening drive on a fumble inside the Shawsheen 10. Next time down the field, though, the Tigers converted, going 49 yards in 11 plays to find pay dirt, culminating in a 5-yard rush by Ryan Murphy. Rooney’s pass to Connor Bryson made it 8-0, Tech, just over two minutes into the second.Tech could have led by more, but two turnovers inside the Shawsheen 10 crippled the Tigers. A fumble by Rooney on the opening drive and an incompletion on fourth-and-goal midway through the second quarter foreshadowed Tech’s second-half struggles.”We got some tough breaks,” Sverker said. “It is what it is.”Shawsheen got on the board four minutes before halftime. Corey Foss took a handoff 70 yards for a touchdown, and Danas’ kick cut the gap to 8-7, Tech.”We played as well as we could with the guys we had,” Sverker said. “We’re proud of them.”
