The Marblehead high school football team received some unsettling news Wednesday – just as it prepared for a game this weekend that could result in a league championship – when it was learned that several football players were at a party Monday night where alcohol was present. Both football coach Doug Chernovetz and athletic director Mike Plansky confirmed that there was a report about the party, but both said an investigation into the matter was still going on.Plansky said that the names of football players had been mentioned as being present, but declined to say how many, or whether any decisions have been made regarding possible suspensions.Plansky did say, however, that there was no marijuana involved. The Magicians could win the Northeastern Conference South division, and gain their first-ever postseason berth, with a win Saturday over Saugus coupled with a win by Beverly Friday night over Winthrop.Should Marblehead lose Saturday, the race – under any one of a number of possibilities and tiebreakers – would not be settled until after Thanksgiving. Three teams – Marblehead, Swampscott and Beverly – are still in contention.According to state athletic association (MIAA) minimum guidelines for substance abuse violations, students found possessing drugs, alcohol or tobacco that aren’t prescribed by a physician are subject to suspension. But where the MIAA doesn’t include athletes merely found in the presence of those using these substances in these minimum guidelines, it does grant member schools the authority to exceed those guidelines.Marblehead takes this a step further. According to the school’s own handbook, “athletes found in the presence of controlled substances will be subject to a hearing by the principal. At that time, punishment will be determined by the hearing committee.”Under Marblehead’s substance abuse code, football players found in direct violation of the school’s substance abuse policy would be suspended for two games. The Magicians have only two games left in the season. The entire Marblehead handbook can be found on the school’s Web site, http://mhs.marbleheadschools.org/athletics.
