MARBLEHEAD – A number of Marblehead football players will not be in uniform tomorrow when the team plays Saugus in a game that could have title implications for the Magicians.
Coach Doug Chernovetz would not say how many players were affected, nor would he give any reason why.
The Item reported Thursday that Marblehead Athletic Director Michael Plansky confirmed there had been a party Monday night where alcohol was present, and that several players were suspected to have been present. He would not elaborate further, saying the matter was still under investigation.
“We have some players who aren’t playing, and that’s all I can say,” Chernovetz said, adding that any further questions be directed to the school administration.
The Item reported Friday that a 15-year-old Marblehead High sophomore football player from Roxbury was arrested for breaking into cars.
A police incident report states that the 15-year-old and three others were breaking into cars parked near the football field at the High school. One of the two cars broken into is owned by Chernovetz
If Beverly wins its game tonight against Winthrop, Marblehead can clinch its first postseason spot with a win Saturday over Saugus.
Should Beverly lose tonight, the Northeastern Conference-South race will come down to Thanksgiving regardless of what happens Saturday.
