With success comes more hard work. That’s the message that East Lynn Pop Warner president Paul McGough imparts as both the B and C teams prepare for their respective New England championship games Friday in Worcester.McGough, in his first year as president, jokes that right now he’s a part-time plumber and a full-time arranger of buses, fundraising and other logistical issues that come with sending his teams beyond the confines of Manning Field. And one of his tasks this week is to make sure that his teams have fans cheering for them Friday – the day after Thanksgiving – at Foley Stadium in Worcester.”We’re going to be in a hostile environment,” he said, noting that the C team will be playing a squad from Worcester Friday at 11:45. The B team plays the New Haven Steelers at 1:30.”We’ll have buses for the parents, for the fans, and for the teams,” said McGough. “We need a lot of support from our fans.”And, if either (or both) the B and C squad win, it’s going to cost even more money as the teams will go to Orlando, Fla., for the national championships. Toward that end, if you go to the Classical-English game on Thanksgiving, Pop Warner – thanks to Manning Field coordinator John Kasian – will be manning a fundraising table.”John’s been fantastic, not only for allowing us the use of Manning Field, but for everything else he’s done,” said McGough. “Playing at Manning Field is like playing at Alumni Stadium (at Boston College).”The C team earned its berth in Worcester with a 7-0 victory this past Sunday over Franklin in the regional semifinals. It was a difficult slog for the Lynners, as Franklin steadily moved the ball against the Bulldogs, advancing to the red zone three times. However, the Bulldog defense stiffened each time, and Franklin never got across the goal line. The defense, led by Kyle O’Connor, Zach Wade, Max McGough, Dan Kane, Eric Brazell, Chewy Newhall, Isaiah Davis, Stevie Collins and Zach Lozzi, held the fort.In the second quarter, Franklin had a first and goal at the nine-yard line, but the Bulldog defense held and got the ball back – and then burned up the remaining time to end the half at 0-0.”Franklin ran the old Pop Warner single-wing formation that initially had our defense on its heels,” said coach Bob Maitland. ” However, we were able to adjust and played a strong defense to hold them scoreless.”It’s very important not to go into the half behind at this level,” Maitland said. “The tremendous team effort late in the first half gave us a huge lift that carried over and was just what we needed to bring back onto the field in the second half.”East Lynn received the second-half kickoff and advanced just beyond midfield and turned the ball over on downs. Franklin then put a scare into the robust East Lynn crowd, advancing to the 11 before O’Connor picked off a pass on a fourth-down play. The Bulldogs then took over at the 20, and with excellent blocking by Jack Leonard, Danya Smith, Zach Wade, Ryan Cook, Brian Brierley, Liam Reddy, Bill Carey and Schuyler Hogan, the team moved the ball with hard-nosed running for a first down at the 30.On a pitch play from Lucas Harris, Davis scampered and dodged Charger defenders for 70 yards to score the game’s first and only touchdown. Collins ran in for the conversion, boosting the score to 7-0, Bulldogs.Franklin put on a late drive, but Davis intercepted a pass at the 44-yard line, allowing East Lynn to run out the clock.”The further we go into the playoffs, the competition gets harder, but we have confidence in our ability as a team to continue to meet the challenge,” said Maitland. “I was really proud of how my team stepped up and fought through despite the extreme cold and wind conditions out there.”McGough hopes people will consider lending support to East Lynn’s fundraising efforts.
