Coach Al Melanson, who had a heart transplant over the summer, is involved with this year’s Lynn Jets team, but for the time being, his assistant, Joe Conlon, is acting as interim coach.”I’m in great health,” said Melanson yesterday. “The heart is performing great. There are no signs of rejection.”Melanson’s eyesight was severely affected by the ordeal, and he has not fully recovered.”However,” he said, “My sight is coming back ? slowly, perhaps, but it’s getting there.”Actually, it’s been improving a lot more steadily lately,” he said. “We’re going to play it by ear.”Melanson was chosen to coach the combined Classical-English hockey team (which took on Lynn Tech this year) after the two schools merged last year. The team nearly made the tournament, falling short after losing to Saugus two days after Melanson suffered a near-fatal heart attack.Even though he cannot assume the head coaching duties yet, he is still involved.”We want to maintain continuity as much as possible,” Melanson said. “We have all our assistants but one back (Jim Bransfield became an assistant track coach at Classical this winter).”The staff includes Conlon, Mike Deering, Joe Gunning, Ron Gaudet, and Dick Wall.”We’re looking for a goalie coach,” Melanson said. “Once we have one, we’ll be all set.”Melanson said he didn’t want to put pressure on the team, but “expectations are high.”We believe we have a nice team coming back,” he said. “We have a great group of kids, and we think that they have an opportunity to do some damage in the league (Northeastern Conference South).”
