The New England Patriots will not get a chance to defend their AFC title in the National Football League playoffs. The Pats, winners (13-0) over the Buffalo Bills this afternoon, had to watch both the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars come up short in their late games against the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens, respectively ? and neither did.The Jets, who finished at 1-4 after getting off to an 8-3 start, fell to the Dolphins, which gave Miami the AFC East championship, based on its better record within the AFC; and the Ravens defeated Jacksonville, 27-7, to claim the final wild card spot, again via the same tiebreaker rule. The Patriots became the first 11-win team to miss the playoffs since an extra wild card team was added (the year they won their first Super Bowl, their final regular-season record was 11-5 and they earned a first-round bye),The NFC playoffs picture is complete, with the Giants, Vikings, Cardinals and Panthers winning the four divisions, and the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons claiming the wild card spots. The only berth still in doubt will be settled tonight, when the San Diego Chargers play the Denver Broncos, with the winner taking the AFC West championship. The Bills, coached by former Swampscott High great Dick Jauron, finish the season at 7-9. And Jauron’s status is very much up in the air. Buffalo got off to a 5-1 start and looked to be poised to take control in the AFC East. But they won two more games the rest of the way. Bills owner Ralph Wilson will reportedly decide on Jauron’s situation this week.
