There’s no news out of Boston College at this hour on the status – one way or the other – of football coach Jeff Jagodzinski – which would indicate he’s still the coach at the school.According to reports, Jagodzinski has been approached by the New York Jets to interview for their vacant head coaching position, and numerous sources, including ESPN, says the BC administration has threatened to fire him if he goes through with the talks. But accordingn to published reports this afternoon, there’s been no movement – one way or the other – on the issue since the earlier ultimatum was reportedly delivered to Jagodzinski.”Right now, everything is quiet,” said BC media relations director Chris Cameron this afternoon. “We have no press conferences scheduled and we still have a football coach.”
Eagles athletic director Gene DiFilippo has declined to comment on the subject, referring all questions to Jagodzinski, but ESPN reports that even though Jagodzinski is not the No. 1 candidate, and that the coach is going through with the interview to gauge the Jets? interest, the Eagles are ready to name offensive coordinator Steve Logan as the new coach.
Jagodzinski?s Eagles have won 20 games in his two years as coach ? 11 (including a bowl win) in 2007 and nine this year. They lost the Music City Bowl, however, to Vanderbilt on New Year?s Eve. In his two seasons, including one with current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, the Jagodzinski-led Eagles played in the ACC title game both years.
The football situation at BC, stable for over a decade with Tom O?Brien, took a turn after the 2006 season when O?Brien suddenly left to coach North Carolina State ? reportedly after having a falling-out with DiFilippo. Jagodzinski, a former assistant under O?Brien, was tabbed to take his place, beating out several candidates including former UMass coach Mark Whipple.
Jagodzinski has long NFL pedigree, serving as an assistant in both Atlanta and Green Bay, where he served as offensive coordinator and worked with current Jets quarterback Brett Favre.
ESPN reports that Jagodzinski will go through with the interview despite the threat to be fired, and that it will take place today.
