LYNN – A Lynn Vocational and Technical Institute custodian charged with two separate crimes in less than a month is on paid administrative leave until a civil service hearing, according to his boss, Inspectional Services Director Michael Donovan.Donovan also said Thursday that John Grocki, along with every other employee in the department, was subject to bi-annual Criminal Records Offender Information (CORI) checks throughout his two-decade tenure in the Lynn Public Schools – checks that did not turn up any issues prior to his recent arrests. The 45-year-old Lynn man was first arrested Dec. 31 after lengthy surveillance revealed that he was stealing money collected from area school lunch rooms. Over a period of several weeks, Grocki allegedly stole thousands of dollars from a secure room in the LVTI Annex Building at 90 Commercial St., and was eventually caught in the act swiping marked bills as police and school officials watched live surveillance footage.Once tracked to a convenience store on South Common Street, Grocki was arrested and found with the marked bills and cocaine in his pocket. After appearing in court for the first offense, Grocki found himself in trouble again Saturday night when he allegedly punched his wife in the chest several times as she drove the couple’s car through Marblehead.According to police reports, Grocki became agitated with his wife after the couple left a night of drinking at the Red Rock Cafe in Swampscott and Maddy’s Sail Loft in Marblehead, when she got lost trying to navigate the narrow Marblehead streets. The two back-to-back arrests that included both assault and drug charges have some parents concerned with the screening process used to hire employees, but by all accounts the two incidents are the first time Grocki has had legal trouble of this kind.”We conduct CORI checks on all of our employees every other year” said Donovan. “Mr. Grocki did not have any problems with those checks prior to this.”Donovan said he was not sure when the civil service hearing was scheduled or if it would take place prior to his next court appearance in February.”I have been informed by our attorney that a civil service hearing has to be held to determine his employment, but that is all I am aware of at this point,” said Donovan.
