DANVERS – Not that Bishop Fenwick needed any kind of a confidence booster, but if the Crusaders did, they got it last night with their 72-56 win over St. John’s Prep in the boys final of the North Shore Invitational Tournament. The Crusaders knew they had to count on the big guns – and the artillery came through. Tournament MVP Mike Clifford led all scorers with 21 points, and Saugus’ Nolan DiPanfilo had a solid 16, including his 1,000th career point, as the Crusaders ended their regular season with a 19-1 mark and assured themselves of the top seed in Division 3 North when the tournament pairings come out Friday.”We’re all good,” said DiPanfilo when asked how the game affected the team’s confidence. “We clinched the top seed. We’re good with that.”As for his 1,000th point, “I’m glad I got it. I was kind of nervous. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to go to the line to get it ?” but he had to. Midway through the third quarter, he hit the second of two freebies (after missing the first one) and achieved the milestone.”He was such a pro about it,” said Fenwick coach Mike Kane. “He didn’t even want to stop the game. But we did. We gave him the game ball, and took a couple of pictures.”The point wasn’t just personally significant, either. It boosted Fenwick into a 45-45 tie with the Eagles in a game that had been back-and-forth all night. It also propelled the Crusaders to go on a 27-11 run the rest of the way.The game had another significant subplot. Coaching the Eagles was Sean Connolly, who had spent the previous three seasons on the Fenwick bench.”It was definitely weird (to see him on the other bench),” said Kane. “He’s been my friend since, I think, 1995, and we sat on that bench together for three years.””He was awfully good to me for three years,” said DiPanfilo. “I have nothing but good (things) to say about him. I wish both him and The Prep well in the tournament.”Phil Egan had 11 points for Fenwick and Cotoia had 13.Pat Connaugton led The Prep with 15 points while Mike Hall had a big game down low for The Prep with 14.Fenwick swept the tournament, with the girls defeating Masconomet, 58-43, in the final. Lauran DiCarlo led the Crusaders with 16 points. The victory stopped a run of three straight titles for the Chieftains.
