Bishop Fenwick’s Mike Clifford was a nightmare for most coaches on the North Shore for the last three seasons. So prolific at his job was Clifford that Division 1 schools came knocking on the door of the Peabody school. On Friday, Clifford made his college choice official. The Crusader center, who scored over 1,700 points and pulled down over 1,000 rebounds, will take his talents to Buffalo, NY, next year as he will play Division 1 basketball for the University of Buffalo.Clifford becomes only the third Crusader player to earn a D1 scholarship, joining Casey Arena, who played for Maine, and his former coach, Sean Connolly, who started at Providence College before finishing his career at Ohio State.”We are really thrilled for him,” Fenwick coach Mike Kane said. “Buffalo is a really competitive program and they have a great chance to make the NCAA’s every year.”The Bulls, coached by Reggie Weatherspoon, are members of the Mid-American Conference, which is the home of schools like Bowling Green, Northern Illinois and Ohio. Buffalo finished this season 21-12, 11-5 in conference play. The Bulls then found their way to the MAC Tournament championship game where they lost to Akron, 65-53.This season, the Bulls also pushed Final Four participant Connecticut to the wire in a 68-64 loss. And in the last five seasons, Buffalo has been to the MAC finals twice, the postseason three times and has won over 100 games.”The MAC really is a competitive league,” Kane said. “They’ve been recruiting him all year.”For Clifford, it was nice to finally have his college plans finalized.”They have a real nice campus and a nice arena,” Clifford said. “And I liked that.”
