The big story this weekend at Pimlico is the addition of super filly Rachel Alexandra, who will be sent away as the favorite in Saturday’s Preakness. The daughter of Medaglia D’Oro was purchased by Stonerside Stable after her 20-length victory in the Kentucky Oaks and has lured jockey Calvin Borel off Derby winner Mine That Bird as she takes on the boys for the first time. She is a great horse and a great story for TV coverage, but offers absolutely no value Saturday afternoon.Friesan Fire was a bad favorite in the Kentucky Derby after being on the shelf for seven weeks after winning the Louisiana Derby and the son of A.P. Indy ran terribly, finishing 18th, beaten by more than 42 lengths. The run in the Derby, coupled with a :58.2 5-furlong work over the Pimlico strip, should have him set for a big run.The Larry Jones trainee has shown tremendous ability as a 3-year-old, winning the LeComte, Risen Star and the Louisiana Derby this spring. There was just too much time off between the Louisiana Derby and the Run for the Roses. Couple that with a bad trip and a slick Churchill Downs track and you have a horse who may be completely overlooked in the betting Saturday.Anyone looking to play exactas or trifectas in the Preakness has to look at the second- and third-place finishers from the Derby, Pioneerof the Nile and Papa Clem.Pioneerof The Nile was always close up in the Derby, poking his head in front between calls before finishing 63/4 lengths behind Mine That Bird.Pioneerof the Nile’s running style should be perfectly suited to Pimlico, and the son of Empire Maker should appreciate the cutback in distance.Papa Clem was beaten by 7 lengths in the Derby while running near the lead all the way around the track. Not the cleanest of trips for the son of Smart Strike, who should give a good account of himself Saturday. There is no doubt the filly is the story ? and the most talented horse ? but looking for value leads us to Friesan Fire. The Preakness has always been a race that allowed horses to make amends for a bad Derby run.Snow Chief (1986), Hansel (1991) and Point Given (2001) all failed miserably as favorites in the Derby only to come to Pimlico and get their Triple Crown win.If Friesan Fire can run the way he did in Louisiana this spring, he should be able to add his name to that list of redemption horses Saturday afternoon.
