MARBLEHEAD – It wasn’t the 14-hour day that the opening round of the Tedesco Cup from 2008 had, but it was beginning to look like that might happen on Friday at Tedesco Country Club.Early in the afternoon, storm clouds began to encircle the course and it looked like Mother Nature was set to throw a serious wrench into things. The rain, however, never materialized. What did materialize was an afternoon of spectacular golf in the opening round of the 45th renewal of one of the area’s most prestigious tournaments. On what turned out to be a tough day for scoring, the team of Artie Buckley and John Lombard took advantage of an afternoon tee time to post a round of 8-under par 62 to hold the lead in the net division going into today’s final round. In the gross division, the team of Mike Zmetrovich and Andy Drohen were simply on fire. Drohen, a former state amateur champion, shot a 4-under par 30 on the front nine to help lead the team to a score of 6-under 64 and a five shot lead over the competition. For a long time on Friday it looked like Tyson Dion-Joe Nekoroski were going to one of the teams to beat in both competitions. The duo recorded a net score of 7-under and a 69 gross to be the leaders in the clubhouse after the morning wave of golfers.Bill Park and Larry Cornell were tied with Dion-Nekoroski at minus-7 with D.Ward Blodgett-Jeff Forbes carding a stellar 64. Four other teams shot 4-under par 66 in the morning conditions. The weather proved to be better as the day went on and so did the scoring as the afternoon wave of golfers went crazy.Buckley and Lombard leapt to the top of the leaderboard with their 62 while the teams of Patrick Duffy-Steve Hanley; Phil DeMakis-Paul MacDonald; Jim McCathern-Mike Jauron and Zmetrovich-Drohen also fired rounds of 64 to squarely stick their names into the mix today.John Barnes Jr.-Luke Wachtel; Brian McCarthy-Bill Quigley and Larry Bellorado-Larry Bellorado Jr. each shot 65 to share ninth place. In all, 20 teams find themselves within four shots of the lead and having a legitimate chance at taking home the crystal today. Another 10 teams sit at 3-under par.The gross division was setting up to be just as tight a race until Zmetrovich and Drohen went on their birdie binge during the final nine holes. Larry Bellorado Sr. and Jr. shot a stellar 69 to join Dion-Nekoroski in a tie for second.Demakis-MacDonald are in solo fourth at even par 70 with defending division champions Matt Sachar-Steve Glowacz a shot further back. Richard Gill-Chris McCarthy; Chris Drucas-Mike McNiff and Kurt Rockstroh-David Scholnick are tied for sixth at plus-2.Kellogg Warner-Tom Collins; Cy Kilgore-Bob Carlson; Jim-Nick Katsos and McCathern-Jauron each shot 73 to share ninth after day one.
