SWAMPSCOTT – Work is underway on the boat ramp at Fisherman’s Beach.Department of Public Works Director Gino Cresta said the old boat ramp, which was more than 25 years old, has been removed and crews are in the process of setting pre-cast cement blocks for the new boat ramp.”They’re not working this week because the tide conditions aren’t favorable,” he said. “But they’ll be back to work on Monday.”Cresta said the contract between the town and Unified Contractors of Medford calls for the project to be completed by Sept. 4.”It’s going smoothly,” Cresta said. “We don’t anticipate any problems.”Cresta said the impact of the project on the beach and boaters is being kept to a minimum.”The area is cordoned off with jersey barriers,” he said. “Most of the boats were out (on the water) for the season before work was started on the ramp. Smaller boats like canoes and kayaks can launch from the sand while the ramp is being rebuilt.”Town Administrator Andrew Maylor said the project would cost $100,000 and it’s something that is overdue.”The boat ramp was in remarkable disrepair,” he said. “This is part of a comprehensive plan to improve the entire area.”Maylor said after the work on the boat ramp is completed, the town would do some excavation in the area to create a more natural height for the beach. He explained the beach would be slightly lower and blocks would be put in place to protect beachgoers from cars in the parking lot.
