LYNN – For the third consecutive major tournament at Gannon Golf Course, a sudden death playoff was needed to decide the champion. After being forced to finish a week after its schedule completion date because of rain, the Gannon Gold Classic wound up with three teams in a sudden death playoff to claim the 27th title. In the end, it was the team of Tim Calvani-Steve Ryback who prevailed over John and Kevin Santry and John Boland-Mark Spencer on Calvani’s birdie on the third playoff hole. Calvani, in fact, birdied all three holes in the playoff only to be matched by John Santry on the first two.Spencer and Boland had birdied the first hole, but failed to make a three on the par-4 second. On Sunday, seven teams began the day separated by two shots. Spencer and Boland were the first to post a score of 9-under par 131 for the two days as they shot 67 on Sunday, but saw a chance to win outright disappear on the final hole when both players made bogey.Playing together in the next to last group, Calvani-Ryback and Santry-Santry were treading water for most of the day. The Santrys made the turn at 1-over par while Calvani-Ryback were 2-under until making double bogey on the par-3 14th.Kevin Santry birdied the 12th and 15th holes and John Santry parred the 18th with a stroke to finish at 2-under for the day. Calvani-Ryback came to the 18th needing a birdie to reach the playoff and Ryback did exactly that to also finish at minus-9.After net birdies halved the first two playoff holes, Calvani’s third straight three at the third was enough to finally end the marathon day.First round leaders Ben Friedman-Tim Perullo shot a final day 71 to finish at 133 and in a tie for fourth with Fred Riley-Dwight Brothers, Jr. and Jason Newhall-Tim Leonard.
