CHESTNUT HILL – All Wake Forest?s Riley Skinner had to do n really n was hand the ball off three times and the Demon Deacons would go back to North Carolina improbable winners of a game they were destined to lose only six minutes earlier.Instead, he was stripped of the ball by Everett?s Isaac Johnson and his dreams for a dramatic come-from-behind victory were shattered on the turf of BC?s Alumni Stadium, as the Eagles scored a gift 27-24 overtime win.Skinner, the fifth-year senior who is know throughout the Atlantic Coast Conference for engineering fourth-quarter comebacks, fashioned another one Saturday. He brought Wake back from a 24-10 deficit with just over five minutes to go into a tie with 11 seconds left, leading his team downfield twice with precision-like passing (and aided by a crucial rock-headed play by BC?s Montel Harris, who got himself run out of bounds late in the fourth quarter while the Eagles were trying to kill the clock, clinging to a 24-17 lead).BC, led by geriatric freshman Dave Shinskie (he?s 25, for the record), couldn?t put the ball in the end zone in the overtime, settling for a field goal by Steve Aponavicius. That left it up to Skinner, who, by then, had been picking the Eagles apart with almost too much ease.Quickly, Skinner brought Wake Forest down to the four, with a first down, and it seemed almost certain that he?d complete the deal in short order, and hang a crushing defeat on the Eagles, who were looking for their first ACC win n and also to atone for last week?s miserably ineffective loss at Clemson.?We were on the ropes,” admitted coach Frank Spaziani. On the first down play, Skinner was supposed to hand the ball off to running back Brandon Pendergrass (who had already busted one up the middle for a 79-yard touchdown run), but n for whatever reason n Pendergrass went the wrong way, leaving Skinner with no one to hand the very exposed football off to.Johnson swooped in and knocked it out of Skinner?s hands n and BC free safety Wes Davis dove onto it. The game ended in chaos, with BC players spilling onto the field in glee; and both Skinner and Pendergrass lying prone on the turf in shock.Spaziani said nothing was discussed among the defense ? no admonitions to try and strip the ball.?We do that in practice,” he said, “but, really, at that point, we?re just trying to make a play. We?re trying to keep them out of the end zone, and hold them to a field goal n or maybe even get a blocked field goal n and try again on the next series.?I think there was some uncertainty on their part, and real aggressiveness on our part,” he said, “and aggressiveness won out.”Linebacker Mike McLaughlin n playing in his first game since suffering an achilles injury last year n said he saw flashes of former teammate Matt Ryan in the way Skinner led Wake Forest back.?I saw Matt do it at lot when he was here,” said McLaughlin. “I went up to him after the game n I don?t think he was too interested in hearing from me at that point n and I just told him I thought he was a heck of a player, and that I was looking forward to watching him the rest of the year.”Spaziani was clearly relieved that BC was able to pull this game out.?We did some things wrong,” he said. “The problems are still here. But we did more things right than wrong.”
