The Daily ItemSAUGUS – Salem coach Scott Connolly hoped that he wouldn’t have to wait too long for his team to show its speed and athleticism ? and score a point as well.Blanked by Winthrop and Bishop Fenwick in its first two games, the Witches got back into the swing of things Saturday at Stackpole Field, defeating Saugus, 27-7.”We finally clicked,” said Connolly. “It was nice to see.”Salem, 1-2, got a balanced offensive game, with quarterback Brad Skeffington (63 yards on the ground and 138 through the air) doing most of the damage. Also effective for Salem was David Kendrick, who ran for 84 yards on 10 carries.”They both played well,” said Connolly. “It was nice to see our guys get out into the open field and show their athleticism. And I thought (Skeffington) threw the ball well.”Saugus hung with Salem for a half, as A.J. Guthro (27 carries, 68 yards) kept the ball on the ground through most of the first half. Yet it was quarterback John Moore who got the touchdown that gave Saugus a 7-0 lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter, running for 19 yards after an 11-play drive. However, Salem didn’t take long to respond. On its next drive,, Skeffington found Antonio Reyes from 40 yards out, and – with the PAT – it was a tie game, 7-7, going into the half. The final 22 minutes belonged totally to Salem. After the Witches intercepted Moore three plays into the opening possession of the third quarter, Skeffington completed two passes from his own 40 to bring the ball down to the Saugus seven, and from there, Kendrick took it in for the go-ahead score and it was 14-7.Saugus went three-and-out, and Salem went right back to work from its own 40, with Kendrick doing the set-up running (three rushes, 35 yards) and Skeffington taking it home from the two. The kick failed, but the Witches held a 20-7 lead. After holding Saugus to another three-and-out, Salem came back one final time – a 25-yard run by Skeffington, and the PAT made it 27-7.”We have the elements in place,” said Saugus’ Mike Broderick, whose team is trying to pick up the slack after several key players from last year’s 7-3 team graduated. “I thought we moved the ball well ? we’re still learning. We had our opportunities, but we just made too many mistakes.”
