SALEM – Jason Ciampa, a Level III sex offender has been found guilty of raping and molesting a 17-year-old inmate in 2005 at the Middleton Jail.
Ciampa, 40, with former addresses in Lynn, Salem and Ipswich, was found guilty of rape, indecent assault and battery on a person over age 14 and assault and battery in a jury-waived trial in Salem Superior Court by Judge Howard J. Whitehead.Sentencing will be held Thursday morning.Ciampa’s defense lawyer, Lawrence J. McGuire tried unsuccessfully to convince Whitehead that his client was not criminally responsible for his actions when he raped the 17-year-old inmate in the segregation unit cell they shared. Ciampa has a history of mental illness dating back to his childhood.Ciampa is a repeat rape offender. He was convicted in 1998 of raping the 5-year-old son of his girlfriend in Salem.
