There’s nothing like visiting Martha’s Vineyard in the rain. At least, the St. Mary’s football team hopes that’s the case. The Spartans, 3-0, travel to the Vineyard Saturday for a game that will either be played or canceled. Because of the forecast of heavy rains, the game – which was supposed to start at 1 p.m. – has been pushed up to 11:30.”It’s one and done,” said coach Matt Durgin.St. Mary’s has pretty much dominated the early action in 2009, winning all three games comfortably.”But,” Durgin says, “we have to improve each week, and so far we’ve done that.”Durgin took Classical down to the Vineyard three years ago, when he coached the Rams, so he knows the Vineyarders’ football program well.”They’re tough kids,” he said. “And they had a big win last week against Coyle-Cassidy”This is by far our biggest test,” he said. “We know we have to play our best.”The Spartans will stay at a youth hostel Friday night and go to the school Saturday morning for breakfast. They’ll leave for home following the game.Tech at WhittierAt Whittier (Haverhill, 10:30), this is a Commonwealth Conference/Large battle of 3-0 teams – by far Tech’s biggest test yet.The Tigers got a solid effort last Friday night against Minuteman, with Rob Murphy rushing for over 100 yards and Joe Brady dominating on defense.Gloucester at BeverlyAt Hurd Stadium (1), the Northeastern Conference’s two co-favorites (Gloucester in the North and Beverly in the South) meet face to face.
