It looks like the rain – or, at least, the threat of it – has aleady defeated St. John’s Prep and Brockton High.In anticipation of the predicted deluge – and especially since The Prep has just spent lots of money upgrading its field – the Eagles launched a preemptive strike Thursday and moved Saturday’s game up a day. It’ll be played Sunday at 3 p.m., at Cronin Memorial Stadium. But whenever the two teams play, it’ll be the same-old, same-old for The Prep – another tough opponent in a slew of them.”We have as tough a stretch of games as anyone in the state,” said coach Jim O’Leary, commenting on successive games against Central Catholic, Everett, Brockton, Mount St. Joseph’s (one of the top teams in the state of Maryland), and St. John’s of Shrewsbury. “But that’s the schedule, and you have to be enthusiastic with it.”Both The Prep (1-2) and Brockton (2-1) are coming off tough losses. The Eagles dropped one to Everett – a game where they stayed close throughout – while the Boxers, who lost last year’s Super Bowl to BC High, fell to another Catholic Conference team – Xaverian.”They had a tough loss, and we had a tough loss,” O’Leary said. “This is always a great game, no matter when we play it.”There’s been a lot going on at The Prep in a very short time – and little of it good. It started in a preseason scrimmage when Jared Coppola broke a bone in his vertebrae. He is now in a hospital in Georgia trying to rehabilitate. And this past week, Brother William Drinan, the school’s former headmaster (who lived on the campus and attended all the varsity games regularly), died suddenly.”He was a big fan of the program,” said O’Leary. “All you can do is go to practice and get ready to play football.”Is it there? Yeah,” he said. “It’s always there. You just have to go out and compete. That’s all you can do.”Physically, The Prep could be healthier. Quarterback Chris Cody has a “tender ankle,” according to O’Leary. “He hasn’t practiced all week, but I suspect he’ll play.”He’s also one of our better defensive players, too,” O’Leary said. “Otherwise, I think we’re healthy. I’m encouraged.”The kids played hard last week – they always play hard,” O’Leary said.
