Greater Lynn Babe Ruth held its end-of-the-season softball banquet at the Hibernian Club recently.This was a special year for the program because Lynn hosted the state championship games as well as the 16U New England Regionals at Grace Rogato Field.The 14U All-Star team, managed by Wayne Kerrins with coaches Ray L’Abbe, Bob Cuozzo and Bob Connors, won the New England Regionals in Pittsfield. The team was made up of Kaitlin Calef, Taylor Cash, Katie Cuozzo, Olivia DeJoie, Jerrica Delos Santos, Tatiana Doucette, Samantha Earp, Angela Erelli, Marianne Halas, Brooke L’Abbe, Chelsey Martin, Danielle Moran, Paola Otero, Kimberly Shinnick and Meaghan Walker.The following 14U players received Coach’s Awards from their respective managers: McKensie Schultz and Adrianna Raymond from the Angels, Kim Shinnick and Nicollette Angelli from the Blue Jays, Sara Barnard and Vannida Ath from the Diamondbacks and Olivia DeJoie and Jessica Perez from the Red Sox.The Red Sox won the division title of the league. They were managed by Bob Cuozzo, and coached by Paul DeJoie and Ron Doucette.The 16U girls All-Star team was managed by Larry Coppinger with Judy Bower and Cindy Donovan assisting as coaches. The team included Chelsey Bartlett, Hannah Byrne, Kim Caron, Katie Collins, Mackenzie Coppinger, Keri Donovan, Shawna Drown, Fallon Gaudet, Natalie Glover, Caroline Guthro, Kathryn Halloran, Taylor Hamelers, Samantha McGuire, Taylor Newhall and Gaby Trahant.The 18U Coach’s Awards from the 18U division went to Lindsay Ballard and Keri Whitcomb from the Rockies, and Kim Caron and Gaby Trahant from the Twins. The 18U division champions were the Twins, managed by Frank Gill and coached by Judy Bower, Cindy Donovan, and Tom Glover.Special thanks were given to Gail Glover, Lori McGuire, and Billy Trahant, who spent hours of their time working behind the scenes to make the regional games a success, especially after the severe rainstorms that arrived on the opening day of the tournament.Six girls are graduating from the 16U Babe Ruth softball level this year. They are: Lindsey Ballard, Kim Caron, Katie Collins, Ashleigh Dawes-Hegan, Fallon Gaudet and Katie Halloran.Each year, the league awards two major awards, the George Cronin Award and the John Holland Award. The George Cronin Award is given to a girl who exemplifies tremendous character on and off the field, works well with others, and is someone who is willing to learn. The award is only given to a graduating player. The nominees are interviewed by a committee of Board members. The nominees for this year were Lindsey Ballard and Fallon Gaudet, with Fallon Gaudet winning the award.The John Holland Award is the Most Valuable Player Award given to a player in the 16U Division. To be eligible for this award, a player must demonstrate a highly successful season, be a leader on and off the field, be willing to help the team in any manner needed, and perform above and beyond the everyday player. This year’s nominations were Mackenzie Coppinger and Keri Donovan. The winner of this trophy was Keri Donovan of the Twins. Donovan had a tremendous offensive year, contributed defensively by being a multi-positional player, pitched and was a leader for her teammates.This year, the softball division awarded its first-ever Judy Bower 18U Directors Award. The award is named after the current softball director, Judy Bower, who came into the league in 1998 and has been here for 12 years. She has always either managed or coached the 14U and 16U girls teams. Her team has won the State Title and advanced to the regional tournaments eight times in that span. In the other four years, her teams have placed second, but still were invited to the Regional Tournament. In the fall of 2008, she was named the Eastern Mass. State Co-Commissioner.
