Marblehead High School made it to the post-season for the first time since the Super Bowl was established in 1972, scoring a dramatic 32-27 victory over visiting Swampscott today at Christopher Piper Field.Marblehead had leads of 18-0 and 26-7 before Swampscott stormed back to take a 27-26 lead early in the fourth quarter. However, with 51 seconds left, quarterback Hayes Richardson capped off a 66-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Alex Haigis.Swampscott made one last desperate attempt, but with a little over two seconds left, linebacker Matt Perlow sacked Swampscott quarterback Matt Barbuzzi on the Magician 15 to seal the victory.Marblehead will play Rockland Tuesday at a time and site yet to be determined for the right to play in the Division 3 Super Bowl next Saturday at Gillette Stadium.In other action, at Manning Field, Lynn Classical beat Lynn English, 34-27, with Jasper Grassa scoring on a two-yard run with 2:40 to go. The Ram defense then stopped English inside the Classical 10 in the final minutes to preserve the victory.At Stackpole Field in Saugus, Eric Mason rushed 13 times for 86 yards and threw a nine-yard scoring pass to Stephen Almquist in the third period as the Sachems stunned Peabody, 14-6, in a resumption of that rivalry after a two-year haitus.Lynnfield put an emphatic period on the end of its most successful regular season since it went to the Super Bowl in 1986, beating North Reading, 35-14. Michael Pescione scored two touchdowns and had two sacks to lead the Pioneers, who clinched the Cape Ann League/Small title two weeks ago, and will play Austin Prep – 24-0 winners over Bishop Fenwick – Tuesday in the Division 3A semifinal. The winner of that game goes to the Super Bowl Saturday.At Fenwick, the Crusaders turned the ball over five times in their loss to Austin Prep. The Cougars, coached by Revere native Bill Maradei, won the Catholic Central League/Large title for the first time in their history and will play Lynnfield Tuesday.At Cronin Field in Danvers, Xaverian assured itself of a date Tuesday night with Brockton as the Hawks spotted St. John’s Prep a momentary 10-7 lead before storming back to win, 21-16. Tad Beuchert had given the Eagles the lead with a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Xaverian’s Joe Colton returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards to put the Hawks up, 14-10. Xaverian scored another TD before St. John’s Kevin Davis hauled in a 28-yard pass from Chris Coady.At Miller Field in Winthrop, the Vikings assured themselves of a winning season with a 41-13 win over Winthrop.Wednesday night, in the 20th Thanksgiving Eve Classic at Manning Field, St. Mary’s completed its most successful season since 2005 – the year the Spartans won the Division 3A Super Bowl – with a resounding 36-20 victory over Lynn Tech.Todd Collier was the sparkplug on offense, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Matt McDermott intercepted two passes – returning one of them for a touchdown – to join Collier as a post-game award recipient. Collier was the offensive star while McDermott was the defensive star.For Tech, Ryan Murphy had a pair of late touchdowns to help narrow the margin of the final score, but he really stood out on the other side of the ball, and was named his team’s top defensive player.
