LYNN – The English boys basketball team’s 83-57 victory over Beverly Tuesday night proved a couple of things: that even with the Bulldogs missing two starters, there’s more than enough talent to go around; and that they’re going to be a work in progress just the same.Anyone who sees the final score, and didn’t see the game, will surmise that the Panthers were blown out of the Cavanagh Field House. But they weren’t. Beverly was still in this one at the half (36-30) and even through the early stages of the third quarter before senior guard Ryan Woumn (26 of his game-high 34 points in the second half) took over. Once he did, it was curtains for Beverly.Click here for a photo gallery.”It was our first game, and some of the kids had jitters,” said English coach Buzzy Barton. “And a lot of them wanted to do too much. But we settled down in the second half and played well.”For his part, Beverly coach Scott Lewis was pretty happy with the way his team played.”Obviously,” he said, “that’s a good team we just played. But we tried to pack it in down low in the first half, and they were cold shooting from outside. But once Woumn hit a couple of threes in the second half, we had to extend. And once we did that, they worked it inside.”English was without starters Travonne Berry-Rogers and Irving Vizcaino (one-game suspensions for violating team rules). Still, the Bulldogs started the game with a 10-2 run before Lewis called a quick timeout. When the Panthers returned to the court, they stayed tight inside, and English couldn’t hit anything from the perimeter.”We had some confusions over who we were supposed to be covering,” Barton said. “And they were really hot shooting in the first half.”We have to learn to be more patient,” Barton said. “Also, we have a lot of new kids we have to work in.”Even though English had its difficulties at times, the Bulldogs never trailed. It was 21-12 after a quarter before Beverly hunkered down on defense, and English seemed to be content with launching up threes ? most of which wouldn’t fall. However, despite all that, English led, 36-30, at the break. It was a totally different story, though, in the third quarter as the Bulldogs slowly and steadily pulled away. Woumn, who had eight first-half points, found the range from just about everywhere, and when he sandwiched two three-pointers around a trey by Beverly’s Mike Clayton (13 points), English started pulling away. And once Beverly felt forced to extend out to the perimeter, Woumn took off. He scored another bucket, and then hit two conventional three-pointers back-to-back. At that point, it was 58-43 and things just became academic after that.Woumn scored 16 points in the third quarter, and 10 more in the final eight minutes as English continued to pour it on.The game served as the official Bulldog debut for Jarell Byrd, who transferred over from Classical during the offseason, and it was a successful one. Byrd, playing more or less as an all-purpose forward, finished with 17 points and was immense on the boards.
