LYNN – It’ll be English against St. Mary’s tonight (6:15) in the boys final of the Walter J. Boverini basketball tournament. But the stories of how each team arrived at its berth in the final are a little different.English, winner of a 92-75 victory over Classical Monday in the early game, sprinted out to an early lead and basically held the Rams at arm’s length until the very end – when the Bulldogs ran away with it.St. Mary’s, which defeated Tech, 68-66, in overtime, had to fight from behind all night long, and didn’t actually take its first lead until the teams hit overtime.Click here for a Boverini photo gallery. The tournament is being held this year at Classical High School. The girls final, which also features the Bulldogs and Spartans, begins at 4:30.Tech grabbed the early lead in the nightcap, and had a 20-10 edge at the first break. It was still Tech’s game at the half, 32-24.”This is a different environment for some of our kids,” said St. Mary’s coach Kevin Moran. “We have a lot of young kids, they’re not used to this type of atmosphere, and they were all over the place in the first half.”We settled down in the second half,” Moran said, “and we had more assists.”The game still appeared to be Tech’s to lose after three, with the Tigers holding a nine-point edge, 46-37. But the Spartans fought hard to bring it down to nine after Tech opened up a 14-point lead.Tech’s lead disappeared in a hurry once the fourth quarter began. Nick Gagliolo (19 points) hit a three-pointer, and then two free throws; and Ronsanto Campbell (16 points) followed with a three of his own, and all of a sudden, with 6:27 to go, the Spartans trailed by one.Tech, on the strength of two free throws by Michael Duarte, a bucket by Garrad Fairweather and a freebie by Trey Gallo, got it back up to five (51-46). Then, Campbell and Rich Warren (20 points) traded threes. From there on, it was all St. Mary’s in regulation, as Matt Manning hit two clutch free throws, and Devin Thompson followed it up with a three to tie the score at 54.With 1:20 to go, Tech had a three-point lead (58-55), but Gagliolo hit one of two free throws, and, with 43 seconds left, Manning’s basket retied it at 58.In overtime, Tech had a four-point lead (65-61) with 1:56 left, but it was all St. Mary’s thereafter. The key plays were a traditional three-pointer by Gagliolo and a basket by Luis Rijo with 22 seconds left that gave St. Mary’s a 67-65 lead.Tech tried two shots – neither of which fell – and, when B-Jay Baptiste hit one of two, it was a 67-66 game. Gagliolo hit one of two down the other end with 4.9 seconds left, but Tech couldn’t respond.”This was a great high school game,” Tech coach Marvin Avery said. “It was everything a tournament game like this should be.”English 92, Classical 75The Rams might have been run out of their own gym had it not been for senior guard Jasper Grassa, who had 36 points (including six threes) and 10 assists.”He certainly played a complete game,” said coach Tom Grassa, his father.”He’s a great player,” said English coach Buzzy Barton. “It’s no wonder he’s already signed, sealed and delivered for college (he’ll be attending Bentley in the fall).”Grassa hit four of those threes in the first half – keeping English from blowing it open early.English managed to stay comfortably ahead after breaking to a 17-9 lead after one quarter thanks mainly to Ryan Woumn, who poured in 29 in an attempt to counter Grassa’s output. But he had help. Irving Vizcaino chipped in with 15, and Jarell Byrd, who is poised to eclipse the 1,000 mark (he needs 31 more points), had 11.”I thought we played pretty well,” Grassa said. “It’s tough to say you played good defense when you gave up 92 points, but I thought we did.”At halftime, it was still close (38-31) and Classical hung in there through three (59-50). But the Bulldogs put it in overdrive in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Rams, 33-25, to win going away.Tony Wonde had 14 for Classical, which will play Tech today
