LYNN – Lynn Classical’s Jasper Grassa had a two-day stretch that most high school players can only dream about. In the first round of the Walter J. Boverini basketball tournament, the Bentley College-bound Grassa poured in 36 points and kept his Rams in their game against English single-handedly.Tuesday, Grassa was back at it, knocking home 29 points as the Rams pulled away to beat Tech, 73-56, in the consolation game. That’s a two-day total of 65 points, if you’re counting. But the big story almost went unnoticed. Somewhere during Monday night’s game, Grassa scored his 1,000th point. It went unnoticed because his coach (and father), Tom Grassa, chose to keep it a secret.”It was such an intense game that he didn’t want to stop it for any kind of a ceremony,” Jasper Grassa said Tuesday night. The tournament became a huge magnet for 1,000-point scorers this year, as English’s Jenicia Duggins reached the millennium mark in the Lady Bulldogs’ tournament-opening victory over Classical. However, the game stopped so Duggins could be recognized.Classical chose to honor Grassa during the consolation game with a ceremony at halftime.”I’m glad it’s over, and that I’ve done it,” he said. “Now, I can put it behind me, and we can go back to playing basketball.”Former Classical (and current English) player Jarell Byrd is next up. He came into Tuesday’s championship game needing 33 points to reach the 1,000-point mark, and finished with 17.
