AMHERST – Revere native Sharon Dawley has stepped down as the University of Vermont women’s basketball coach to accept the position of head women’s coach at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.Dawley, who was a star athlete at Pope John High School in Everett, compiled a 128-86 record during her tenure at UVM, making her the program’s all-time leader in wins. She led the team to back-to-back America East Conference tournament championships and she was at the helm for the team’s only NCAA tournament win, which came against Wisconsin last month.Prior to coaching at UVM, Dawley was a member of the Dartmouth College women’s basketball staff for 10 years. She served as an assistant from 1993 until 1997, when she was promoted to associate head coach under Chris Wielgus. Before coming to Dartmouth, Dawley served as head coach at Tufts University for nine seasons. While at Tufts, she led the Jumbos to a Northeast Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship (1986-1987). The Jumbos reached the NIAC title game her first five seasons as coach and the ECAC championship semifinals her last three of four years with the program.At UMass, Dawley will succeed Marnie Dacko, whose contract was not renewed after eight seasons in Amherst. The Minutewomen finished this season 5-9 in Atlantic 10 play and 11-19 overall. Dawley’s contract at UMass is for seven years. In October of 2009, Dawley was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, one of two inductees in the Division I College Women’s Coaches category. Dawley received her bachelor’s degree in business from St. Anselm College in 1983. Her nephew, Dan Dawley of Revere, was a captain of the Malden Catholic basketball team this season.
