LAWRENCE – A Lynn felon who was caught carrying a semi-automatic weapon in a camouflaged rifle case along with two magazine clips four years ago in Peabody may serve up to five years behind bars.Pablo Colon, 31, last known address of 4 Sheridan St., Lynn, went on trial this week, but decided to make his plea Tuesday afternoon in Lawrence Superior Court following opening statements in a deal worked out between the prosecutor and defense.Colon pleaded guilty to carrying a large-capacity firearm, possession of ammunition and a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm after previously being convicted of one prior drug- or violent-crime offense. He was sentenced to serve three and a half to five years in state prison by Judge Timothy Q. Feeley.Assistant District Attorney Michael Sheehan said he was prepared to establish at trial that Colon was arrested in Peabody after a deputy sheriff serving papers on Margin Street noticed a man running out of a backyard carrying what looked like a gun in a camouflaged gun bag jump into a 1992 Toyota Camry and sped away after noticing the officer.Gil Medeiros, the deputy sheriff, pursued the man, later identified as Colon, in his Sheriff Department vehicle. In the meantime, Medeiros also notified Peabody police, providing a description of the vehicle.Police chased the Camry and eventually pulled Colon over on Abington Street. Colon told the deputy he had just taken the gun from a man who tried to kill him and then Colon ran off.Inside the vehicle, police found a .45 caliber semi-automatic revolver with two magazine clips, containing 48 live rounds of ammunition.Police later tracked down Colon and arrested him.Defense attorney Raymond D. Buso was prepared to argue at trial whether the firearm was viable.Initially Colon was charged with being a felon with three prior offenses, instead of one. His confession spared him of a mandatory 15-year state prison term.Colon was in default on the case for more than a year. He received credit for the time he has spent in jail awaiting trial on the case.
