SALEM – A Hopkinton man who allegedly raped, molested and provided pornography to two Marblehead children beginning in 1998 has been indicted by an Essex County grand jury.Jeffrey C. Benger, 35, of 12 Wildlife Road, stands charged with two counts of rape of a child with force, five counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14 as well as three counts of dissemination of pornography. The allegations arise out of incidents in Marblehead on diverse dates from July of 1998 through December of 2006.On May 12 of this year, one of the victims and his grandmother met with Marblehead police Sgt. Marion Keating and prosecutor Colleen Cashman, telling them of the incidents that began when he was about 6.Benger apparently lived across the street from the boy and babysat him.Two years later, Benger moved into the basement of the victim’s grandmother’s home, where the boy and his sister lived. Benger lived there for about six years before moving. The boy told police that Benger showed him pornography, molested him and made him perform a sex act on Benger and that the sexual encounters began with him dating back to 1998 through 2002.The boy said he later learned in health class that what Benger was doing to him was wrong and refused to have any more sexual involvement with him.As the investigation evolved, police learned that Benger also allegedly molested and raped a young Marblehead girl during a six-year span beginning in 2000.A conviction on the two counts of rape of a child each carry a potential life sentence in state prison. The indictments handed up are not an indication of guilt: rather it is a legal process that allows a case to be transferred from District Court to Superior Court, allowing for a more severe punishment.
