SALEM – A homeless man charged with strangling and raping a girl in the elevator at the Central Square Commuter Rail station in Lynn last month remains held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.Joseph Sarcione, 23, homeless, appeared Thursday morning in Salem Superior Court for his arraignment before Judge John T. Lu. He pleaded innocent to two counts of rape, two counts of assault and battery, and a single count of indecent assault and battery on a person over age 14.Assistant District Attorney Kristen R. Buxton felt Sarcione poses a danger to the victim and the community.A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 28.On June 6, a 17-year-old girl said she was waiting for a train to Gloucester after visiting a friend in Lynn.She told authorities it was shortly after 8 p.m. when a man, later identified as Sarcione, approached her, asking to borrow her lighter.As he tried to start a conversation, the girl said she walked away and began looking at the train schedule, realizing she had already missed the train.The victim then decided to return to her friend’s home. As she entered the elevator, Sarcione pushed her inside, placed his hand around her neck and raped and fondled her.She pleaded with him to stop, but it did not end until the elevator doors opened where two men were standing on the platform level.The two men pulled Sarcione off the victim before he fled. They took the girl to the police station where she reported the sexual assault. She was taken to North Shore Children’s Hospital for treatment. The victim sustained several bruises on her neck.Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority detectives recognized Sarcione from a security camera in the garage.Sarcione was arrested by Lowell police for another apparent assault on a female in Lowell on June 8.If convicted on the two rape charges, Sarcione faces up to 40 years in state prison.
